Pros and Cons of marrying your sister!

On weekends I work as a wedding photographer, which means that I am behind the scenes of the wedding process. I see the fears, the anger, the nervousness, and the anticipation that all of these couples have on their special day. I have seen some things so odd that it would make you wonder if the bride and groom were even friends, much less dedicating their lives to one another. This post however, isn’t about a throw down between bride and groom; its way better than that.

DISCLAIMER: The names of the parties involved have been changed to protect the innocent.

While shooting a wedding for a couple “Jake” and “Jill” I found out that Jake and Jill were brother and sister. Now, before you freak out they weren’t biological brother and sister like in Alabama ( Sorry Alabamians ), to be fair they were only step brother and sister. I bet your thinking, ” What’s the big deal “, well the big deal is that their parents got married when the bride and groom were just little kids. So besides blood these two were in all respects siblings. So, itmade me ask myslelf very important question. What are the pros and cons of marrying your sister?

PROS

  • You don’t have to split your time between two families on holidays
  • All your monogram stuff stays the same
  • You don’t really have in-laws
  • Family picture time is shortened significantly
  • You already knew you could live with your spouse

CONS

  • IT’S GROSS
  • The divorce could cause your parent’s to divorce
  • You have to explain this to your kids one day
  • Your family only pretends to understand
  • Complete strangers will blog about you

As you can see, I didn’t jump the gun and judge these people, I thought long and hard about the lifestyle choice that this couple made. In the end I just don’t get it. You know what they say ” There’s plenty of fish in the sea”, that means don’t be lazy-leave your house to find a girlfriend. A final quote from the great Luis Corkern, ” When you hear people laughing, they’re laughing at you, cause you married your sister.”

Hey, I found this blog through your wife. I was laughing so hard reading your pro/con list! That is such an awkward situation to be in, I cannot imagine what is going through their families minds. Although, a life with out in laws, interesting… 🙂
